NEIL YOUNG GREENS HIS RIDE 16.12.2008 Music, Motoring News
Old rockers never die they just go green, well, this is certainly the case with Neil Young who recently spent $500,000 converting his treasured 1959 Lincoln Continental to run on alternative energy. The influential singer/songwriter, who unveiled the reformed gas guzzler at a sales conference in San Francisco last month, claims the 2.5 ton/19.5 foot classic can now effectively return 100 mpg compared to its former desert-draining consumption of just 9 mpg. To help with the conversion, the 63 year-old musician partnered with Jonathan Goodwin, a mechanic known in the trade as the ‘motor head messiah’ – who specialises in converting thirsty motors into fuel efficient vehicles without compromising on performance. According to thegreencarwebsite.co.uk, Young and Goodwin replaced the original block with a rotary engine that runs on natural gas. They also enhanced the Lincoln's range with a secondary fuel source called the slog, which incorporates a technique that runs water through a hydrogen fracturing process, capturing it in the exhaust and reusing it. The pair claim that the vehicle can also generate more electricity than it requires to run, allowing Young to harvest the surplus juice to help power his house. The success of this labour of love conversion subsequently inspired Young and Goodwin to form Linc Volt – a Wichita based company that's working to develop a cost effective method of refitting existing cars that they can sell into dealerships across the country. Young, an outspoken anti-war campaigner, states that through creating clean automobile technology he hopes to eliminate the need for war over energy supplies while enhancing the security of nations throughout the world.
