RAMPWORX SPRING BREAK REVIEW

23.05.2009

Well, if you glanced outside the window on Friday 22nd May you would be forgiven for thinking that it was more like ‘the wet winter break’ as opposed to ‘Spring break’.

Thick, black clouds hung heavily over the skate park in a grey smoky armageddon like doom… however, happily for us they were all cried out after 9 successive days of rain….. praise the Lord!! (If you believe in one!) No matter.. it was going to take more than dreary faced clouds to ruin this event!

An excited crowd had gathered early in this small corner of Netherton as excited teenage chatter filled the entrance of the skatepark complementing freshly prepared Nandos chicken filling the early evening air, mmm… Nandos!! I don’t think there is a finer smell in the land than an open-air grill with some sexy Nandos chicken on it! Surveying the scene, Rampworx Car park was barely recognisable as climbing walls, supplied by Sefton Youth Service, stood proud and ominous alongside the outdoor clothing and accessory specialists, Blacks who kindly donated a range of goodies. Similarly, the Billabong sponsored surf machine, rodeo bull and the Red Bull Dodge truck, packed full of hi tech visual and audio treats ensured a whole host of fun activities for everyone to try out.

The Juice FM truck/band stage completed this unusual outdoor buffet of treats with bands like the Life Project; Find the Escape and Baby Gravy who belted out their own unique brand of rock and indie tunes for over 3 solid hours. Like many of the Nandos dishes there was a lovely sprinkling of spices in between the main course as the AJ dance crew turned up 30 strong and punctured through the gloomy, but vibrant din with some funky, edgy urban dancing. The girls seemed, unusually, to provide a welcome distraction for the already hyperactive lads high on chicken, music and adrenalin sports! Almost tipping them over the edge was a  rare and raw appearance from Liverpool born, KOF who, as the light faded, took the place apart with a 5 star swagger and dignified charm unseen from a local artist at Rampworx in quite some time. He bounced, postured and propelled the crowd through a lively and energetic set, sealing a very impressive night in Rampworx long and distinguished 12-year history.

This was, yet another milestone for what is effectively a humble northwest children’s charity allegedly ‘just’ catering for extreme wheeled sports. This is what makes Rampworx so original, so diverse and so forward thinking and this has only been achieved with the energy and support of the guys and gals who ride and visit our park every week without which we would be nothing. So thanks again to everyone who turned out in support. Thus, special mention must, also go to our sponsors, such as Gumball 3000, Neue, Red Bull, Cains, Battlefront, CALM, Dickies who provided us with a cool range of products; including T-shirts, caps, sweat bands, lanyards, watches and a whole host of goodies that were swallowed up by the ravenous and insatiable crowd.

Next is the Chaz Sands invitational on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th May…. Hmmm… something tells me that this is going to be yet another memorable event. Make sure you check out the web site www.rampworx.com for more pics and updates.
